Some writers complain that all the good ideas are taken. They say that they cannot find anything new to pitch. Everything has already been written about.
Yes, we know that.
What does one write about then? The trick, I think, is to find a new angle for all those new ideas. The angles are out there – you just have to open your eyes wide to see them (or keep your ears to the ground, as they say).
I’m suddenly inundated with work. I’ve got assignments due up to May 2009 (which I intend to submit by Feb before this baby is due). The assignments are all reinventing old ideas – there’s no earth shattering stuff here (yet). But the magazines want them. And they’re willing to pay me good money to put these old-ideas-in-a-new-avatar on paper for them.
Look around you for stories. Then, find a twist in the tale.
